Walking With the Wise

"He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed."
Proverbs 13:20

Your success is dependent on who you surround yourself with!

Think about the five people you spend the most time with, are they helping you move forward or are they holding you back? Do you make a conscious effort to spend time with people who have more experience or more knowledge than you do? I am a firm believer that we should always have a mentor and be a mentor at all times in our life, but what's really important to our success is who we call our friends.

Who do you spend time with just to spend time with them?
Who do you hang out with?
Who do you talk with, have discussion with?

These are the people who will shape your future. Are you surrounding yourself with wise men and women or with fools? Are you heading for success or destruction?

If you don't like the way your life is headed find someone who is already where you want to be and spend time with them!

Allow God to use that person to speak into your life, to encourage you, challenge you, and strengthen you. Of course in order to do that you have to be willing to take correction. Solomon also said:

"Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge,
But he who hates correction is stupid."
Proverbs 12:1

According to this verse the definition of stupidity is not a lack of knowledge but an unwillingness to be corrected. So it is not enough to simply surround ourselves with wise people, we must also allow those wise people to give us correction, to teach us, and to show us a better way of doing things. Otherwise we will stay stupid.

Who are you surrounding yourself with?
Is there someone you should be surrounding yourself with?

  1. Another interesting thought would be, "Am I someone that is helping others improve or am I holding them back?" As important as it is to recognize who we are hanging out with for our benefit we also need to make sure that we are someone others benefit from hanging out with. As you said it, "Have a mentor and be a mentor." In ideal situations you can have accountability relationships where both roles are being fulfilled, you are helping someone in one area of their life while they are helping you in a different area of your life.

    1. True, it is important to make sure that we are also the wise people helping others be wise as well. I think there is a benefit to having at least one solid mentor and also at least one person that we are definitely mentoring, but when it comes to our friends it is definitely ideal to have a relationship where you are both constantly challenging each other.
